'Social uncertainty'
Through staged photography and cinematography, I aim to create open ended work evoking emotions of uncertainty, and ambiguity that explore my fears of isolation and feelings of being unwelcome. The narrative structure within the work uses light and colour to convey feelings of fear, a sense of environmental or psychological isolation, and strains between us as human beings. My research has involved investigating the relationship between photography and film, and the cinematic. The work references artists such as Edward Hopper, Gregory Crewdson, Erwin Olaf, Richard Tuschman and Gillian Hylan and I have engaged with the writing of David Campany and Edward S. Casey in order to explore the reciprocal relationship between film and photography in which, as David Campany explains ‘each has relied upon the other for its self-definition’.
By openly staging and visualising my own personal fears and sense of isolation, I am attempting to initiate a discussion in an area that I feel has often be considered taboo.
